Hoover is an American vacuum cleaner company that started out as an American floor care manufacturer based in North Canton, Ohio. It also established a major base in the United Kingdom and for most of the early and mid-20th century it dominated the electric vacuum cleaner industry, to the point where the "Hoover" brand name became synonymous with vacuum cleaners and vacuuming in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The first upright vacuum cleaner was invented in June 1908 by James Murray Spangler (1848–1915), an asthmatic who suspected the carpet sweeper he used at work aggravated his condition. After refining his design he obtained a patent for the "Electric Suction Sweeper" and set about producing it himself. Spangler gave one of his Electric Suction Sweepers to his cousin Susan Troxel Hoover (1846–1925) who used it at home and, impressed with the machine, told her husband about it. William Henry Hoover (1849–1932) saw a market opportunity, and bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retaining Spangler as production supervisor with his pay being based on royalties in the new business. Spangler continued to contribute to the company, patenting numerous Suction Sweeper designs until his death in 1915. Spangler's family continued to receive royalties from his original patent until 1925.

1908 also saw production begin of the immortal Model T Ford. The model accurately depicts a Model T Ford used by Hoover in the early 1920's.

The Hoover van was released in 1983 and it had a orange body with a black chassis and roof.
